My Beautiful Shelf - DIY

I have been wanting {to build and to decorate with} a beautiful DIY easy shelf forever - and I finally have one! Even better, my husband and I made it ourselves! I'm quite proud of that - and if we can do it, so can you!

I was inspired by this shelf from I Am Momma Hear Me Roar and this shelf from Shanty-2-Chic.

Also, I love that it is similar to this $89 shelf from Pottery Barn, except the Pottery Barn one is only 4 feet (ours is 6 feet) and the PB one doesn't come in a natural wood finish - which I really wanted. Sometimes you don't just DIY to save money, sometimes it's the only way to get what you really want! {But, now I want a bookshelf...and I don't think the hubs and I will be able to tackle that one...}

Anyway, I put my inspiration shelves together and this is what I got:
DIY Shelf with Decorative Corbels

I love the corbels - they look like they are holding up the shelf, but they are actually just screwed in underneath the shelf. Remember when I found them? My big key is pretty awesome too!
Pottery Barn Knock Off Shelf

I love our personalized frame that we got as a wedding gift. Isn't that cool?!
DIY shelf - using plans from Shanty-2-Chic / Ana White

Our materials:
  • Wood (we got pine) - 1x2, 1x4, and 1x6 - all 6 feet long.
  • Finish Nails: to attach the front 1x2 piece (just 3, but now we have a BUNCH!)
  • Drywall screws: to attach the back 1x4 to the bottom 1x6 and to screw the shelf into the wall
  • Wood Glue
  • Wood Stain
It was actually quite easy to build - all for about $20, and if we could do it, so can you! I'm very proud of it.

I need to get some more decorative pieces for this shelf, it's my "mantel" since I don't have one of those. I hope to switch it out seasonally...but right now I just don't have enough stuff. And, most of the decor I do have happens to be picture frames - which kind of makes it look like we are obsessed with ourselves! So wish me luck in finding cute non-picture decorative items. :)

  8. Nice job! You'll have to create more and use up all those extra nails! We just built a new home and I have my own set of tools now. I have a similar type of shelf that Im fixing to cover with old rulers. Isn't it fun and gratifying to build stuff? I saw you at Shabby Creek Cottage linky party. Thanks for sharing and inspiring!
